SaaS MVP: what to build first, what to skip, and what it costs

Most SaaS MVPs in 2026 land between $30,000 and $60,000 and take two to four months. The difference between a launch and a rewrite is deciding the few things that are expensive to change.

An MVP is not a small version of the whole product. It is the smallest product that a customer will pay for. Getting that distinction right is the difference between launching in ten weeks and spending a year on features nobody asked for.

Decide the expensive things first

A handful of decisions are painful to reverse once you have customers: how tenants and their data are isolated, how identity and permissions work, and how you model the core objects of your product. Get those right, and everything else can stay deliberately simple. Get them wrong, and the 'MVP' becomes throwaway code.

Build, defer, skip

  • Build: the one core workflow, sign-in with teams, billing with plans and trials, an admin view, and analytics from day one.
  • Defer: public API, SSO, advanced roles, native mobile apps. Add them when a paying customer asks.
  • Skip: custom design systems, micro-services, multi-region infrastructure. You will know if and when you need them.

What it costs in 2026

$30k–$60k
standard B2B SaaS MVP with roles, billing and integrations
$15k–$150k
the full range across productised and traditional agencies
2–6 months
typical build timeline depending on scope and compliance

Compliance-heavy products (healthcare, finance) sit at the top of that range because of audit, encryption and access-control work. Everything else should cluster in the middle. Our fixed-price MVP starts at $30,000 with multi-tenancy, billing and analytics included, because those are exactly the things you should not be asked to pay extra for.

After launch

The first ten customers will tell you what to build next. Instrument activation and retention before launch, ship in two-week sprints afterwards, and resist rebuilding until the data demands it. A dedicated product team on a monthly retainer is usually cheaper than hiring for a roadmap that will change three times in a year.
