AI Overviews are cutting organic clicks. Here is what still works.
New 2026 data shows click-through rates on queries with an AI Overview are down by more than half. The response is not to abandon SEO, but to change what you optimise for.
For two decades the deal was simple: rank on page one, earn the click. In 2026 that deal is being renegotiated by Google's AI Overviews, which now answer a growing share of questions directly on the results page. The numbers from this year's studies are stark, and they change how a sensible SEO programme should be run.
- 0.61%
- organic CTR on queries with an AI Overview, vs 1.62% without (Seer Interactive)
- 58%
- lower CTR for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview appears (Ahrefs)
- 8%
- of users click an organic result when an Overview is present, vs 15% without (Pew Research)
- 64.8%
- of Google searches now end without a click (2026)
What the data actually says
Seer Interactive tracked 53 brands, 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion impressions between January 2025 and February 2026. On queries where an AI Overview appeared, organic click-through rate compressed by 61 percent. A separate randomised field experiment found Overviews cut organic clicks on triggered queries by 38 percent, while user satisfaction stayed flat. People are getting what they need from the answer box and leaving.
The damage is not evenly spread. Informational and educational queries take the biggest hit. Commercial and local searches, where users still want to compare, buy or visit, hold up far better. And there is an early sign of recovery: click-through on the Overviews themselves rose from 1.3 percent in December 2025 to 2.4 percent in February 2026 as Google added more prominent citations.
Three shifts for an SEO programme in 2026
- Weight the keyword map towards commercial and local intent. Informational traffic still matters for authority, but it should no longer carry the revenue forecast.
- Optimise to be cited, not just ranked. The pages that appear inside AI Overviews are the ones with clear entities, quotable claims, structured data and up-to-date facts. This is where SEO and Generative Engine Optimization overlap.
- Report on revenue and share of answer, not sessions. If traffic falls while leads and citations rise, the programme is working. If you only watch sessions, you will make the wrong calls.
What we do differently
Every SignalNest SEO plan now includes AI-search readiness: schema, entity clean-up and citation-ready formatting. For brands in competitive categories we run a dedicated GEO programme that measures how often you are cited across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. Search has not died. It has split into two surfaces, and you need to be visible on both.
Traffic is an input. Being the answer your customer acts on is the output.
