Entity SEO: making machines certain who you are

Before anything can recommend you, it has to be confident you exist and know what you do. Most companies leave that question genuinely ambiguous across their own properties.

Key takeaways

  • Entity problems are usually inconsistency across properties rather than missing information.
  • Write one canonical description and use it verbatim everywhere, truncating rather than rewriting.
  • Define the Organization once with a stable identifier and reference it; redefinition creates competing entities.
  • Ask assistants what your company does; the specific errors point directly at the stale source causing them.

An entity is a thing a machine can identify and reason about: your company, your people, your products. Entity SEO is the work of making your organisation unambiguously identifiable, so that a search engine or language model can connect a claim to you with confidence. It matters more in 2026 than it did, because generative answers name entities rather than listing URLs.

The problem is usually inconsistency, not absence

Most companies have plenty of information about themselves online. What they lack is agreement. The company description on the homepage differs from the one on the about page, which differs from the LinkedIn profile, which differs from the directory listings created by a former agency. Each variation is small; together they force a resolver to guess which version is authoritative, and it may guess wrong or hedge.

The fix is boring and effective. Write one canonical paragraph describing the organisation. Use it verbatim everywhere: structured data, about page, social profiles, directory listings, press materials. Where a platform forces a shorter version, truncate rather than rewrite.

Structured data as the anchor

  • One Organization entity with a stable identifier, referenced from every page rather than redefined on each. Redefinition with small differences creates competing entities describing the same company.
  • sameAs links to every profile you actually control. This is how a machine connects your site to your presence elsewhere and confirms they are the same organisation.
  • Person entities for named authors and executives, linked to real profiles that corroborate their expertise.
  • Only claims you can substantiate. Omit founding year, address and telephone rather than inventing them; an absent field is neutral, a wrong one is a contradiction waiting to be found.

Corroboration is what converts a claim into a fact

Saying what you do on your own site is an assertion. The same statement appearing in an industry publication, a partner's site, a conference listing or a customer's case study is corroboration, and it is what moves a machine from repeating your claim to treating it as established. This is the point at which entity work and public relations become the same activity.

How to check it

Ask several assistants, in a fresh session, what your company does and where it is based. Compare the answers to each other and to the truth. The errors are diagnostic: a wrong location usually traces to a stale directory listing, a wrong service description usually traces to an outdated profile, and a confident answer about a different company entirely means your entity is not distinguished from a similarly named one. Fix the source, then re-check in a month.

An absent field is neutral. A wrong one is a contradiction waiting to be discovered.
